The name Saadani had an intimate connection in the nineteenth century with the Arab settlement. The name of a fishing community known as Utondwe, once known as Saadani. The name Saadani has been a significant name in the country’s history for many centuries or more, as documented in the chronicles of the Portuguese and ancient travelers such as Johannes Rebman, El Mazoud, Ptolemy, and Richard Burton.Historic Saadani is not only proof of these travelers’ journeys, but also proof of an ancient city that was once a commercial center, managing both international and domestic trade, including slave trade.
 
It was designated as a National Park in 2005, under Government Notice No. 188.After annexing the previous Saadani Game Reserve, Mkwaja Cattle Ranch, Zaraninge Forest Reserve, and the Wami River, the park has an area of 1100sqkm.
