Ngorongoro Crater

Tanzania Destinations - Ngorongoro Crater

The Ngorongoro Crater in Tanzania is often referred to as the 8th Wonder of the World. It is the largest intact volcanic caldera in the world and is also a world heritage sight.

The Ngorongoro Crater in Tanzania is a naturally formed amphitheater. The walls rise 2,000 feet into the air and enclose the nearly 10 mile wide crater. Within this area resides the densest population of large animals in the world.

The crater is a microcosm of the massive Serengeti National Park and includes a staggering amount of wildlife. In one day it is possible to spot all of the large carnivores that Africa is famous for.

The Crater is truly awe-inspiring and will be one of the highlights of your safari. It lives up to its famous reputation as being an area abundant with exotic wildlife, and it is also an area where it is likely that you will see lions, hyenas, or cheetahs in action.

The rim of the Ngorongoro Crater rises to an altitude of 7,000 to 8,000 feet while the flat crater floor rests at an elevation of about 5,500 feet.

Any Northern Tanzania Safari should ideally include a visit to Ngorongoro Crater: it is one of the most beautiful natural wildlife safari sites in the world and an exceptional place to interact with people from the Maasai tribe.
